correct. we would have to have friends outside of our node for that to start happening. Even then the data is stored on our server still. It is just viewable on others.

I will work on making local the default setting

The little chain link icon at the bottom of the post window is where you set posts to local only. Someday I will figure out how to connect us to the rest of the fediverse so that matters.
